Broadcast from New York's Mercury Theatre in 1938, this infamous radio play, based on the novel by H. G. Wells, had many terrified listeners convinced that an actual alien invasion of Earth was taking place. Adapted by Howard E. Koch, co-writer of Casablanca, the 1938 War of the Worlds radio play script portrays the frightening tale of an extraterrestrial takeover. This science fiction drama, delivers a realistic news report of a Martian invasion of Earth, starting with unusual events on Mars and culminating in alien \"war machines\" landing in Grovers Mill, New Jersey. The narrative uses simulated live news bulletins, panic-stricken on-scene reports, and expert interviews to convince listeners that the invasion is actually happening, featuring heat rays and poison gas as weapons before the Martians are ultimately defeated by common earthly bacteria. The script was written for Orson Welles Mercury Theatre, transforming H.G. Wells' novel into a contemporary American setting.
